The New Black at Exeter

May 22, 1968

On May 22, 1968, The Exonian devoted a full supplement to race at the Academy, entitled The New Black at Exeter. In its pages, the paper explored the founding of the Afro-Exonian Society (AES) and the experiences of Black students at the Academy. It provided one of the most in-depth pictures available into campus dialogue during the first year of the AES’ existence. At the heart of the issue, however, lies a deep tension. While the piece contains vital information, it undoubtedly invoked racist stereotypes, fearmongering and the demonization of Black students at the Academy. At the same time, it also provides direct accounts, quotes and even full-length pieces from crucial voices in the formation of the AES and Black activism at Exeter.

The 142nd Executive Board chose to include the full edition of The New Black at Exeter in The Exonian’s timeline due to the volume of information from the edition included in the 1960s pieces. The editors of The Exonian urge readers to review the edition in full. Click the image or this link for the issue.
